My work is the result of processes that incorporate forms of abstraction. My love of exploring abstract art has evolved into a way in which I can alter my connection with something I would describe as having experienced in person. Finding a balance of the representational and purely ambiguous form I try and capture something that will be visually engaging to the viewer but hold within it the sense of personal interpretation. It is impossible for me to give my experiences to the viewer but through art I can create a platform, in which I invite the viewer to play, enjoy and make of the work what they want, to inspire imagination if you will.

I have a huge love of landscapes both urban and rural and spend a lot of time working out how they affect me and how I understand them. By exploring my experiences and memories helped by digital means such as photography and art programs I can begin new dialogue with interpretation and my preconceived awareness.

Aesthetics, materiality, experience, process, object and medium all play a part in what inspires me to explore methods of translating my understandings and interpretations of sources that physically surround me. This is close to saying that I use abstract art as a way to disassemble my apparent experienced knowledge of something and then reengage with what I thought I had interpreted.

In the past two years I have become interested in the concepts of dialogue and language, especially when applied to viewer and art object. Interpretation is key in this notion as language is the tool in which we begin to understand what we are looking at or engaging with. Vocabulary will no doubt have an impact on what we think we know about something and I believe this will impact on the choices we think we make for ourselves. What I try to explore within my work is not a lingual form of representation but a visual presentation that form dialogue through individual interpretations, to turn representation into ambiguous visual forms and vice versa.

This is an exhibition I have put together that aims to show how abstraction can be used as a form of research into the reengagement of things we are familiar with. Primarily I wanted to generate a space in which the viewer has the opportunity to follow one person’s engagement with landscapes and environments. Instead of a single piece of work representing an artist’s concept I want the audience to be submerged into place of on going thoughts and development of ideas, for them to play with and hopefully create their own unique dialogue through interaction and interpretation of ambiguous natured artworks.

The show consists of digital photographic manipulations that question the concept of photography, object and the seemingly throw away nature of digital media. Given that it is so easy to create images these days what can be done to draw the attention back to something as simple as a landscape photograph, to destroy the illusion from digital representation and give back a sense of exploration and experience to the new generated object.

My on-going crosshatch series inspired by skies and mass repartitions within both nature and man made objects. These drawings invite the viewer to decipher their own world through different textures and shades that help objects appear like that of making images out of cloud formations.

My new platform paintings play with architectures, landscapes and perspectives commonly seen in windows, rooms, corridors, streets etc. by reducing these layers to lines or block colours I can generate depth and form free of specific representation but that rely on the viewer to transform the flat spaces into a 3d realm in which you can envisage yourself physically exploring.

I know its been a while since my last post but i have been grafting away trying to keep on top of uni work and life. They don't seem to go well together.

My first trip to St Ives then.

What a place.

At the Tate there is currently an exhibition all about abstract art, which I highly recommend visiting if you can. I spent two days in there and could easily spend another two. Despite one of the tours insisting on talking about Turner rather than the show it was fantastic. Also there is a nice show at the Hepworth in Wakefield by Claire Woods.

I have also started to make preparations regarding my solo exhibition in Sheffield’s Bank Street Arts Gallery. I look forward to revealing more in regards to this show but for now I will leave you with some photos of Devon and St Ives x.

I am currently looking at the whole concept of experience and what can be created to heighten our perceptions during an event. I was asked recently to help create an environment in the basement of Lush in Sheffield for a new perfume. The perfume was inspired by the events caused by a storm. I ended up building an installation that would be a sound based piece with a moving visual to hopefully distract the viewer from the usual basement environment. These are some pictures taken from the footage I shot near Stanage Edge. A challenge presented itself when the weather was far from storm like, I tried to create a sense of storm like weather by placing a fan behind the screen that was back projected with the film. This provided the screen with a wind like effect and to some degree fooled the visual effect. This joined up with the sound of wind, rain and thunder to become an environment built from different elements to produce a unique place in which to present the focus, which was the perfume and a presentation from artist Taylor le fin.

also did this sculpture for a show in sheffield called 20 by 20. bit more of an experiment than anything else but fun.

Its surprising what jumps out to you when you visit somewhere else for a while. I was painting in Manchester this last week for a painting exhibition at Blank Media Collective, which despite the rain making it hard to complete the painting to how it was intended to be, it was a great experience, and also a good show inside. I then spent a few days sampling the life in and around Manchester. It seemed not to be effected by the recession anywhere near as much as Sheffield and was really nice to see people out and about enjoying themselves. Also in the wake of the riots that had taken place just near where I was staying. Being shown around the areas these had taken place there was little left that you could call evidence of the damage that was created. Sheffield at the moment however looks like the riots where just yesterday and we didn’t even have any? I also really like the “I love Manchester” scheme that has been created as a result of the senseless damage and crime that took place. I had to be told what it was about as everywhere looked like the famous I love New York t-shirt.

I was sad to hear the corner house gallery had to move out. Such a great space and ive seen lots of great shows there, hope they find a great home and carry on. I really enjoyed the cube gallery show at the moment to, I recommend a visit if you are near.

Anyway. on with work. I have lots of ideas coming at the moment and keeping busy. MA will be starting again soon, I am producing and EP for the very talented Nat Mortimer, creating storms in basements for somewhere in town, making a soundtrack for a film for a fellow artist which goes hand in hand with a project I have in mind. Next month I should have lots to share.

The act of turning into form the subject of observation. Sitting in town and watching things interact with things. The bins filling up near the sandwich shop, the cues coming and going at the bus stops, the people working on window displays to try and catch the eye of possible customers, the birds eating the remains of some ones quick bite at lunch, the pavements channeling people like farm animals giving a reassurance of security and right of way, the disappearing puddles of water from a just past rain cloud, the noise of what could only be described as the ambience of a passing chaotic moment followed by another.

The drawings I have made whilst sat here are not going to give the audience these experiences, they will not see the people I have seen, they cannot hear the noise or smell the air from this wall I sit on. In reading this you well see your own bins and birds, your own bus stop and shop windows. In seeing the drawings you will not know of anything I have just spoken of without reading about them. As an artist I can make suggestive marks or place language in or around the object such as titles to give just enough information to set a scene if I feel one is needed. Can I then look at general things we can relate to as an audience?

I am often drawn to flows of things, shapes and distances when I come to make artwork. I am keen on giving as little information out as I can because want the viewer to have a similar experience like that of reading a book or poem. How many times have you heard people say the book is way better than the film? This I believe is down to the reader being able to build up the world of language and make it his or her own. As soon as someone tries to capture their view of the scenes set by the words they begin to take away the readers own world and in many cases this will fall short of the from the fantasy world of the reader. My process of sitting and watching isn’t to represent the experience I am taking onboard but to be inspired by what stands out to me at that time. This then becomes thought, and thought becomes form in the shape of whatever I feel would be the best way to represent these interpretations.

All I seem to be able to spend time on at the moment is reading so I don’t have too much to show you at the moment. I do manage to doodle on the bus and at random time here and there and if I was a teacher I would highlight the importance of doodling in one form or another. Im working on patterns and prints at the moment too and will have to see how the watercolours take to the ink before I expose them to the world.

Its been really nice being back in the recording studio with matoza and mash and im really hopeful for the future music projects to start taking shape. I will be posting some new sounds and ideas soon. I have a project of making filmesque music inspired by westerns.

its been a tad warm of late but there has been some incredible skies to work with. i have a few things to share with you at this moment. the 1st being a sculpture i made at Bokfest. it is designed to not change how we engage with scenery rather how we begin to notice things when they are presented to us in different ways. by framing specific views in vast areas we start to take in details rather than blurring the information that sometimes have the ability to overwhelm our senses. here is footage of that sculpture.

So the degree show comes to an end for another year. I particularly enjoyed the architecture model sculptures; the video feeds of the circuit board city and the string room in the main room. I do feel that the space students have to work with these days really affects the show and would like to see the university address this next year. I doubt that will happen though. I do think the students have done well but get frustrated when you see some work that needs more space to get the best from the work. I hope that it was a good experience and that some of you stick around to add to the creativity that seems to be really expanding in Sheffield within the last 5 years.

I have some illustrations and prints that will be put up in town soon just above the Moor but ill post some information when it is up.

Its been nice working in the print rooms with kid acne the last week and im really looking forward to his show coming soon to the millennium galleries, some great works have been made.

Hello.

i have recently bought a sweet little microphone and will be recording some ideas soon. also looking forward to recording my brother as hes an incredible talent. stay tuned for audio works. had a successful carboot day on sunday, drawing board and tube for £1 couldn't believe it, its a huge one past rotherham and i highly recommend it, they have a huge stall for just pies, rhubarb was my pie of choice and it was amazing. anyway, back to work x

so its the degree show time again. i cant believe that its been a whole year since it was me. well done to all the students involved, looks great and with such little space. if you haven't been down yet i believe its on for another week so make sure you go, its also at S1 near corporation.

Well then, been a busy few weeks to say the least. Bokfest was fantastic and met some great people, ate some great food, watched some cool films, made some artworks and met some friends I hadn’t seen for a while.

I have been trying to get a shop together for some time and its finally here, I have new works ill be putting in there soon so stay tuned. (link to the right)

Im still working on a website and I have a feeling that will take some time as it will be pretty in depth and only want it up when I am 100% happy.

The last few days I have been in print department with kid acne and I am really looking forward to his show at the millennium gallery coming soon.

I may also have some sort of a show coming up soon and have enjoyed making some new drawing for it.

Bokfest is upon us.

Since the show at the forum I have not been on this planet, hence the lack of posts on here. Had a lot of uni work to get done and now I am looking forward to finishing for the summer. I am working on a website and shop so stay tuned for them.

Bokfest arts festival takes its debut appearance this coming weekend and I can’t wait to see what we come out with. Really enjoyed building cinemas in barns and building sculptures and stages.

Been a while since I have had chance to post anything. It’s been a very busy month and lots going on. Held a show at the forum in Sheffield, helped raise some cash for the Ba fine art students which was fun, been working on the farm getting things ready for Bokfest which I am really looking forward to, ill be making a totem pole in the next few weeks for it too. Been building willow sculptures and making work in regards to responding to the Genius Loci of Sheffield. These will be my next pieces of work so stay tuned for them.

I am working on website and a shop will be coming in June sometime all being well.

From Monday the 7^th march I will be exhibiting new paintings and prints at the forum bar and café in Sheffield. The last few weeks have been somewhat of a blur but ill be able to hang up the gone fishing sign soon, some much needed time off for good behaviour.

Been a tough start to the year so far. Over thinking, under thinking, doing, undoing, to the point where it becomes stuck, writers block, position of the moon, lack of vast amounts of water maybe, who knows? The saying back on track doesn’t work as it’s the track that has been lost for a while now but I feel productive again so that’s hopefully a step back on course. Anyway, here are a few pictures of some screen prints and drawings I have done over the past week.

News on a festival I am helping to set up will be coming soon and I am very excited about that, stay tuned.

Welcome to 2011. Lots of things going on at the moment, mainly in forms of research and sketching ideas but its all feeling pretty positive at the moment. I have some new work that will be finished soon, which further explore landscape, architecture and representations both familiar and not so. These are abstract paintings, drawings and collages that I hope will inspire the imagination of the viewers.

At the moment I am enjoying reading about the Suprematism movement from 1916, must have been a crazy time to be an artist.

Stay tuned for news of an exhibition im working on for hopefully the beginning of summer and new works will be posted soon.

If you didn’t catch the reality documentary on bbc2 this evening you should catch it on iplayer, well worth a watch.

been training up on how to use a lathe and enjoying it a little bit to much. its unbelievably therapeutic. here is an addition to the Santa Fe series im working on, they are my own spin on the Kachina dolls from New Mexico. more coming soon!

also just seen marnie stern in sheffield, she was fantastic and id recommend her music if you like your music on the full on side of things.

Santa Fe series

After my trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico this September it was hard not to be inspired by the art work, amazing surroundings, people, architecture, food and culture to name just a few things. In response to all that it has shown me I will be doing a series of works that take influences from all these things and will take on various forms from sculptures and screen prints to paintings, photography and more. These new works will be ready soon and I am excited for the feedback. Until then here are some teasers and some other photography projects I am working on.

in the midst of sorting a studio out and settling into the new house, getting set for the MA so ive not had much time to put new things up here. been busy making things though. below is an example of the new photography and sculpture project, using 00 scale models i will be making scenes that hopefully will trigger emotions both good and bad. stay tuned for more on those as its very early doors.

the mural was left in santa fe, new mexico where i was lucky enough to stay for 2 weeks last month. the sky at 7000 ft is incredible as you can see in the pictures, they are in now way edited either, it really is that dark above you and almost white at the mountains. whilst i was painting the mural i was surrounded by blue tailed lizards and humming birds, an incredible place to paint.

i have some other projects im working on at the moment but not sure where im going with them at the moment, they are to do with sign and settlements, the picture from the plane to chicago shows the farms and buildings from along way above and i just like how it looks so organized and plotted out like a game almost. anyway.

starting the MA next week and hopefully the studio will start soon, lots to look forward to.

what an amazing time the last month has been, really feel like i am back on track with a lot of things. my artwork is coming along and i am happy with what is turning into a great project. as a bonus before i start the MA in september i am off to new mexico to spend some time with my family. i cant wait as i am already influenced so much by the culture there so expect lots of pictures and talk of chili eating and burning of the Zozobra.

Research is going well in prep for new project, here are a few sneak peaks into some sketches i have been working on. started work for my new website but this will be a long way off but looking forward to getting stuck into that.

Its nice to be settled into the new house and able to get back on it regarding artwork as last month has been a tad crazy. Lots of great feedback on the new tshirt design so thanks for that.

I will update soon when some new paintings are finished.

been a bit unsettled recently, between houses, courses, artworks and working on some research.

its all coming together slowly but surely and have some things to look forward too.

after that great start to the world cup i found it very easy to get back to this picture im making out of pencils, its going to be part of a new project im working on and hopefully exhibiting later this year. the degree show is coming to an end this weekend and has been a bit of an anti climax to a dull year but looking forward to getting the new works done. i have a drawing and sculpture project im very excited about but cant give too much away right now.

what a crazy 4 weeks i have just had. the show looks great and a huge well done to all involved.

cant get used to the 3 years going by so fast so i joined the MA, must like the stress.

already started a new video and sculpture project and will be working on some new screen prints and t-shirts for this summer.

thanks to everyone who has helped me these past weeks and years.

you should stop by the show and have a gander, i am impressed with the diversity of the show too, something for everyone there i think, i particularly like the hairy walls.

Ok then, what’s been going on?

Uni is coming to the end and I have degree shows in mind. Every year there are fund raising events we have to put on to help with the final show. I have put together a two colour a2 screen print and you can get them for just £20 all proceeds go towards the degree show.

Lots of ideas are flying around at the moment and I am just experimenting with videos and photography and seeing where it takes me.

I will be doing some live drawing at bungalows and bears this Monday and there are allsorts of things going on, bands, artists and hopefully that beautiful bar maid x.

exciting things are on the way, I am hopefully getting a hold of a projector soon, some ideas are starting to brew up nicely.

I am working on a T-shirt I hope to get out within the next month or so.

hello, i have not been able to post anything in ages as my pc is crap and is broken.

been pretty busy having fun after 3 months of intense writing for uni, which was utterly dissapointing and i don't really want to know what i got.

went to see battle and the mars volta in a week and where the wild big monsters with issues are, good film though.

now back to work though

here is a picture that has started a new project off and im looking forward to seeing where it goes.

not much else to show you at the moment, maybe doing a cheap print for the new year so that will be fun.

yup, i got the flu and it knocked me out

nearly back on top of things now though, just getting in to writing for the course and then back to some projects i cant wait to start. for now though im just in the library every day so not much to show you in the form of work.

I had a great time in Manchester this Thursday. The Buy Art Fair was held in the Urbis Gallery and will be on until Sunday. I have a few pics of the opening night for you and i would highly suggest you pop down if you can. It was nice to see work from artists i’ve known about for a long time.
I’ve only been to Manchester a few times and i still can’t seem to get my bearings there at all, good pubs though.

What’s going on in Sheffield at the moment, loads of little shows everywhere, i like the idea of empty shops being used for art projects and to be backed by the council for once, i was getting a bit upset that Sheffield looked as if it was at war. I want a window for myself.

By chance i came across Mr Phlegm working on his comic painting project which was nice. You can see what he’s been up to on his websites blog, go look.

I am really looking forward to the buy art fair in Manchester starting on the 24th sept and i am working hard to get some new and exciting things ready for it.

I have finished some big scale drawings to continue the series im working on recently. They are coming on nicely. I do need to get a show somewhere soon as i have 0 space in my room and the drawings are starting to stare at me, maybe i should stop watching David Lynch films for a while?

Im working on some new ideas for videos at the moment and starting to get my mindset back towards Uni.

What else has been going on?

I went to see the new Yes Men film at the showroom which is well worth a watch, tragically funny. It was good to be at the Q&A with them in Sheffield as well. A big well done to Sheffield as not much comes her way anymore.

A birdie told me that Butter Brain are playing in September...

Kid acne is curating a graff show in Sheffield at archipelago gallery in town very soon.

Check out a band called Crystal Teetheart, a three piece band with 2 basses duelling over pretty fat beats, great stuff.

Phlegm is very busy working on his books, i can’t wait to see them. Go to his website and have fun.

Millennium gallery has a good show on at the moment.

i recently enjoyed trying to explain mints and mince to a kid, it souldnt have lasted an hour though.

i was recently talking about evolution the other day and found it interesting that some people dont see it possible to evolve in thier lifetime. i think were constantly evolving, maybe some faster than others but still. then i came across a new work by Bruno 9li and it gave me hope that instead of letting evolution happen some people are on a quest to get it whatever it takes, you can see this on his website by clicking the link to the right, good work.

currently moving house wich is proving a bigger task than 1st thought. i have way to much stuff and feel like tourching it all and starting a fresh. maybe change my name and claim im from cuba, long story. i have had time to get a new screen print together wich i hope to be getting about soon. each one is slightly bigger than A1 and hand painted aswell as screen printed. only 15 of these will be sold.
the coop is a new cafe on london road with a promising approach to the comunity, im looking forward to seeing the plans there ive had an inside scoop on.
the old sweet shop has an exhibition starting this saturday the 4th with Rocket1, a very talented man with a can, look forward to seeing what he does in the shop.
millenium and site gallery are host to new exhibitions that are both well worth a look.
and mars volta's new album is a grower but its infected me well now and i cant stop playing it loud, let it get you.

writers block

big plans are finally in motion for this year. its been hard to get the ball rolling after the course ended this year, there really doesnt seem to be any enthusiasm around in sheffield or maybe im just looking in the wrong places, who knows? these things i cant share at the moment but will be cool if it comes together.

writers block can be hard to get by, in the past whenever i came across it it boils up in a negative way and stops the creative flow. often what happens now if i hit a bit of a mental block i set myself some daft things to do that dont take much time but often lead me to make fun of myself. like the 1 minute film below i made in 1 hour. this can really work as it puts your mind in a completely different place and can distract from the problem which is often just a case of over thinking.

i have some new work at TOAST at the forum in sheffield so call in if your passing by.

needed a garden table and had loads of wood left after the show on the moor.

in doing this i realised how much i like painting on wood so i maybe putting some things up soon.

the tshirt auction went realy well and was glad i could contribute something, the night raised alot of money for the 3rd years at hallem, congratulations x

on a funny note i found that my exhabition had been sabotaged by phlegm, you can find his work through the links on the right. go have a look and make sure u see his blog, his new work is fantastic.any way, i have far to much work to do on the reading and writing side of things so ill post anything if i get bored and paint instead, likely to be honest x

snow days. my arm actualy still hurts from throwing snowballs last week. good times.

PRISM last night was great, a fantastic turn out aswell. these are the drawings i did for it entitled WITHOUT ME.

new prints are in the old sweet shope now plus some new tshirts by KID ACNE wich are very nice indeed. there is a new exhibition starting there on the 7th feb wich will be sweet.
im doing some photography for a project next week so i hope to get them up here soon.

been locked away for a while but its been productive. loads of new projects on the way. i have work in a show called PRISM in sheffield on the wednesday 28th january at the showroom.
looking forward to that, plus ive cot the paint brushes out again, its been way to long, i love painting canvases.

the opening at s1 in sheffield went really well. lots of people lots of good work and no disasters. i have some work going into a one night event in sheffield called prism. this will be on the 28th january at the showroom. im still working on the drawings and happy with the way they are looking, just hope there finished in time.

been looking at buildings alot recently, bold ugly buildings. you know the ones that look like there part of a bleek future in a crap sci fi film. people dont seem to notice them though. have they become so mundane huge and gray that they fall into a world outside what we like to interact with. anyway, they led me ont to doodling these ans i will be doing some photography on the subject soon. till then my house mate has just bought a 360, damn him, i just want to kill things 24-7.

woooop im tired. just got back from a very misty berlin. the place looked like bladerunner. crazy times and soooo much art it made my knees bleed.

so then, has anyone this side of the Galaxy not heard of the bbc this week. ross and brand that is. its time like this i get a lil bit angry at how easily people can get manipulated into thinking their opinion counts. in a week or so it will die down to the point that no one cares again and something else will have to sell papers to make arseholes money. oh and if your one of the people that complained, kill yourself, please. you couldn't find anything better to do with your time. i could go on for along time on how unimportant your existence really is but it wouldn't go in would it. your wrapped up so snugly in societies blankets to see the world in a better way, and to be bothered about things that matter. in other words - twat

looks like the exhibition im doing on the 11th maybe changed to a different day. im not gonna make guesses but ill post it when i know more things.

if you see me out and about i maybe in a better mood as we now have heating again in the house. my lord it got cold there for a while. having no gas for 2 months in winter sucks. if your in that situation then i can sympathize but go get a hot water bottle, i saved my soul with one of them.

been really busy with uni and art for the past month, but enjoying it when its running smooth.

i have an opening on the night of 11th november with my course which im looking forward to.

it starts at 8pm if you would like to come visit me, bankstreet studios sheffield, near the boardwalk off snig hill.

off to berlin on the 4th for 5 days, cant wait for that.
